Where's Doug? Is there anything we can do about these spammers? It's getting frustrating to me, I can't imagine how you folks who are administrators are tolerating it.

Spam on the internet is becoming more and more prevalent. There are folks out there that do nothing but spam forums all day long. We could get around them by not publishing posts until they have a moderator’s approval, but in our opinion, that would not be fair to our regular members, so we simply delete the spam as fast as possible.

Spammers are coming up with more devious ways to take advantage of the internet. They have bots that spam unprotected comment sections. They do what is called referral spam where they have bots visit your site over and over again posing as a real person. Your stats go through the roof, and you pat yourself on the back for being so popular. Then you look at your stats and see that hundreds of people are being “referred” from the most twisted porn sites imaginable. They do this to spam your stats and get a link on your site. This increases their visibility in search engines.

They will steal your email address if possible and use it to send spam all over the world. It is called email spoofing. Last year this happened to my work email. All of a sudden I was getting thousands of spam emails every day not to mention all the returned mail that came to my in box. I had to pay for a high powered spam service to cut it back to a reasonable amount.

This is the kind of thing we are up against. We are doing the best we can without destroying the freedom we have at talk-grace.

I realize now that my post may have looked like I was chastising you for not being on top of this. If my post came across that way, I apologize for it was not intended so. It's just that you are the most technical guy I could think of...

I appreciate your answer. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing this become a little more restricted from that sense. Although, it seems that we have been fairly lucky thus far, only getting about a half dozen or less spam posts in the recent past (since I've been back).

So, thanks for what you do here at Talk Grace and elsewhere.

I'm going to Houston over Labor Day for my niece's wedding, and planning on going through Arkansas (driving). Really want to get together and show my kids Thorncrown other than just in the pictures. Pray that I can afford to take the whole family.

Hi Ed and everyone.

On many days I delete about 2 or 3. Some of what comes up is IMHO Illegal activity. I think that at some point legal action (by someone somewhere) will be taken as these people are posting everywhere!

Perhaps someone will go after the manufactures in some way? I've seen Norton's antivirus, Viagra, [besides "porn"]. Does not say much about these "products" or "companies" if this is how they are going to get advertised.

I didn't take it that way. I was just trying to explain how big a problem spam is becoming on the internet. Some fear that it will eventually overwhelm the net and ruin it for everyone. I don't think that will ever happen, but it is a growing problem. For example, there is now over 100 billion spam emails sent everyday. Spammers are coming up with new ways to do their dirty work even turning unsuspecting folk's computers into spam machines by infecting them with a virus. I have heard that much of it comes from overseas, so it is hard to prosecute. Apparently, over 70 percent of the sites referred to in spam email are hosted in China.

The only way Spam will probably stop is if folks stop responding to them. I doubt that will ever happen either. We may eventually have to go with a more restrictive moderation system if things get much worse on this forum.

I would love to see you and your family Labor day weekend. Don't worry about the lodging. I'll work something out.
