Written by Charles B. Hawes in 1923 and won the Newberry Metal the same year. It takes place in 17th century England where our main character, Philip Marsham, bred to the sea, must flee for his life from London and sign on with the Rose of Devon. Philip's bold spirit and knowledge of the sea soon win him his captain's regard. But when the Rose of Devon is seized in midocean by a devious group of "gentlemen of fortune", Philip is forced to accompany them on their murderous expeditions. Written in old pirate and English linguistic style, with it's bloody battles, brutal buccaneers and bold spirited hero, this rousing tale will enthrall readers in search of seafaring adventure.
